The Stages of Change: Moving Forward in Life and Business

Change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, and understanding that process can make all the difference between being stuck and thriving. Dr. Prochaska’s stages of change—Precontemplation, Contemplation, Preparation, Action, and Relapse—aren’t just about personal transformation. They’re about leadership, business, health, and the delicate balance between them all.

Let me tell you a story.

The Precontemplation Stage: “There’s No Problem”

Imagine a CEO named Sarah. Her business is doing okay, but her energy is dwindling. She’s putting in long hours, leading her team, but also ignoring her health. She doesn’t see a problem. She’s too focused on the next deal, the next project, the next quarter. This is the precontemplation stage—a place where we don’t even recognize we need to change.

Whether it’s her health, her business, or her personal life, Sarah’s too busy to notice how much she’s lost in the process. We’ve all been there—too caught up in the grind to recognize when the wheels are falling off.

Contemplation: “Maybe Something Needs to Shift”

A few months down the road, Sarah feels burnt out. She knows something’s off. Her relationships are strained, her energy is low, and even her business feels like it’s hit a wall. Now she’s in contemplation—thinking about change but not ready to commit.

This is the phase where leaders often get stuck. You know there’s a problem, but fear or doubt keeps you from moving forward. The same applies to our health, our leadership, and our life. We contemplate whether we need a different strategy, but we hesitate.

Preparation: “It’s Time to Make a Plan”

Sarah starts taking small steps. She signs up for a business coach, looks into a fitness program, and begins clearing time in her schedule. She’s preparing to change. The beauty of this stage is the momentum. It’s subtle, but it builds.

Leaders in this phase start to strategize. They know they need to adjust their habits, whether it’s getting more sleep, implementing new business strategies, or finding balance in their personal life. You’re no longer just thinking about change—you’re preparing to make it happen.

Action: “Let’s Do This”

Now Sarah is taking action. She’s working with a coach, showing up at the gym, making healthier food choices, and creating more space for her family. Her business starts thriving again because she’s taking care of herself.

Action is the stage where change comes to life. In business, this is when leaders stop talking about innovation and actually start innovating. When you take care of your health, it spills into your work and life. You’re not just performing better—you’re living better.

Relapse: “Falling Back is Part of Moving Forward”

But here’s the thing—no change is without setbacks. Sarah gets slammed with work and falls off her health routine. That’s relapse. It happens to all of us. But relapse isn’t failure; it’s feedback. It’s a reminder to adjust course and keep going.

Leaders often see setbacks as defeat, but they’re not. They’re part of the journey. In health and business, we fall back, learn, and step forward again. The key is to recognize that relapse isn’t the end. It’s a natural part of lasting transformation.

Stalled with One, You’re Stalled with All

The truth is, whether it’s your health, your business, or your life—if you’re stalled in one, you’re stalled in all. Sarah’s story could be yours. We can’t expect our businesses to grow if we’re not growing. We can’t lead others if we’re not leading ourselves.

The stages of change remind us that transformation is a process, not a single event. So, where are you? Are you stuck in precontemplation, not realizing you need to change? Are you contemplating a new direction, but fear is holding you back? Are you preparing, taking small steps, or are you already in action, driving forward? And if you’ve relapsed, take a breath—it’s all part of the process.

The most important thing is to keep moving forward, one step at a time. Because stalled with one, you’re stalled with all. But once you start shifting one area, you’ll see that momentum ripple across every aspect of your life and business. That’s when true leadership—and transformation—happens.

So, where are you on the journey?
