As we step into 2025, I feel an air of possibilities. It’s not just that goals are set, or that resolutions are made. It’s an excitement that builds for a fresh start. But before we dive into all the doing, let’s pause and reflect on something deeper—the internal voices that shape how we approach our ambitions: our Inner Critic and Inner Coach and the reason we trip and fall so quickly after setting New Year resolutions.
These voices aren’t just background noise. They influence every decision we make, every risk we take, and every way we respond to success or failure. Over the years, I’ve learned firsthand how reframing the Inner Critic can turn self-doubt into self-compassion and create real, lasting growth. Let me tell you a story to illustrate how this played out for me.
The Day My Inner Critic Took Over

Many years ago, I was invited to speak at a major event. It was a dream opportunity—one I’d worked hard to earn. But as the date approached, my Inner Critic went into overdrive.
“What if you bomb?” it whispered. “You’re not as good as the other speakers.”
It wasn’t subtle, either. This voice followed me through every practice session, every slide revision, every sleepless night leading up to the event. The Critic convinced me that the stakes were impossibly high, and if I stumbled even once, I’d prove to everyone that I wasn’t cut out for this.
The morning of the event, I was so wound up I could barely eat. I went on stage, delivered the talk, and… it was fine. Not life-changing, not groundbreaking—but good enough. Yet even after, my Inner Critic kept hammering: “You could’ve done better. You shouldn’t have messed up that one line.”
Looking back, I realized that my fear of failure had robbed me of enjoying the moment. The Critic wasn’t trying to sabotage me—it was trying to protect me from embarrassment. But its method—hyper-focusing on flaws—left me drained and disconnected.
I vowed never to let the Inner Critic rule me again. The Inner Critic really shouldn’t be making the decisions and it certainly shouldn’t be the CEO of your life, like I’ve seen it be for so many of my clients. It’s a journey worth making if you want to be kinder to yourself and, as a natural consequence, unleash your superpowers.
Reframing the Inner Critic
That experience taught me a lot about how I wanted to handle my Inner Critic going forward. Instead of letting it run wild, I began practicing reframing.
Here’s what I learned: the Inner Critic isn’t a villain. It’s a well-meaning but clumsy part of us, trying to keep us safe, often by playing out worst-case scenarios. But when we listen and respond with kindness—when we call in our Inner Coach—we can shift its energy into something constructive and much more powerful.
The Many Faces of the Inner Critic

Your Inner Critic might not sound exactly like mine, but it has its patterns. Here are a few of the most common ones:
- The Perfectionist Maestro What it says: “If you’re not perfect, you’re failing.” What it does: Keeps you endlessly tweaking, micromanaging, or hesitating to share your work.
- The Comfort Seeker What it says: “Stay in your lane. Don’t risk it.” What it does: Stops you from stepping outside your comfort zone, avoiding challenges that could lead to growth.
- The Watchful Guardian What it says: “One mistake will ruin everything.” What it does: Keeps you overly cautious, afraid to take risks or try new things.
Awakening the Inner Coach
For every critical voice, there’s a compassionate counterbalance—your Inner Coach. This voice reframes doubt into opportunity, fear into growth. Let’s revisit those Critic archetypes and see how the Coach responds:
- The Perfectionist Maestro becomes the Constructive Collaborator, saying, “Done is better than perfect, and trust leads to great outcomes.”
- The Comfort Seeker evolves into the Growth Advocate, encouraging, “Discomfort is part of growth—lean into it.”
- The Watchful Guardian transforms into the Trusting Guide, reminding you, “Mistakes are how you learn, and they don’t define your worth.”
This shift doesn’t silence the Critic—it transforms it into an ally.

How to Reframe for 2025
So, how do you actually put this into practice? Here’s what’s worked for me:
1. Notice the Critic’s Voice
During moments of stress or self-doubt, pause and listen. What’s the recurring thought? For me, it’s often something like, “You’re not ready” or “You’re going to mess this up.”
2. Name the Intention
Ask: What is this voice trying to protect me from? Is it fear of failure? Embarrassment? Rejection? Identifying the intention helps you respond with understanding instead of resistance.
3. Reframe the Message
Invite your Inner Coach into the conversation. When your Critic says, “You’re not good enough,” your Coach might respond, “I’m learning and improving with every step. I don’t have to be perfect to make an impact.”
4. Practice Self-Compassion
This one is key. Celebrate small wins, let go of perfectionism, and remind yourself that progress matters more than flawless execution.
5. Anchor Your Reframes
Write them down and revisit them regularly. For example, I keep a list of affirmations in my notebook, so when my Inner Critic gets loud, I have a quick way to ground myself.
What I Wish I Knew Then
If I could go back to that event years ago, I’d approach it so differently. Instead of letting my Inner Critic take over, I’d acknowledge its fears but lean on my Inner Coach to keep things in perspective.
My Coach would say:
“You’ve prepared for this. You’re here because you’re capable. Even if you make a mistake, you’re still worthy, and the audience will connect with your authenticity, not your perfection.”
That shift would’ve let me enjoy the moment, imperfections and all.
Your Turn
As we move into 2025, I invite you to reflect on your own inner dialogue. What does your Inner Critic sound like? And how can your Inner Coach help reframe its messages?
Reframing isn’t about silencing the Critic—it’s about transforming its energy. When you do, you approach life with clarity, confidence, and less unnecessary stress.
